"Jaws" Skipper Dies

Frank Mundus, a well known shark hunter has died at age 82. As stated in the article he was the inspiration for the crotchey skipper in the movie Jaws. Mundus was better known as monster man. He has accomplished many things in the history of fishing. He's caught a record breaking 3,427 pound great white in 1986. The heaviest fish ever caught on a rod and reel. Mundus also claims harpooning a 4,500 pound great white in 1964. It was that fish, that led his friend Peter Benchley to pen the novel Jaws. The book was turned into an Oscar winning movie in 1975.
Mundus caught an untold number of sharks in the waters off Montauk since he began fishing there on his boat, The Cricket, in the early 1950's. He was in Montauk over the summer and caught 20 sharks in 20 days. Frank Mundus died in Honolulu hospital from complications of a heart attack, and suffered at Kona international airport on sept 6.
